How we build every piece
FRAME
Each frame is made of 1 ¼” kiln dried, hard wood such as maple or basswood. This prevents the frame from warping and shifting. The joints are securely glued and screwed together for extra durability. All the legs are a part of the frame with the exception of show wood legs and bases. The show wood legs and bases are made out of ash wood, which are first stained and then screwed into the frame.
At Silva, we make our own frames. We do not stock frames, every piece is custom made as the orders come in.
SPRINGS
The spring construction used on a frame depends on the style of the piece. The majority of pieces that we manufacture have loose seat and back cushions. In such styles we use a web and coil construction. There is a row of jute webbing both above and below the spring coils. Each spring is then fixed to the webbing with fasteners called Hog Rings. You will find nine coil springs within each seating area. The advantage to this type of springing is the added strength; the whole springing system moves up and down with your body weight.
Some tight seat pieces are made with No Sag springs. This type of system creates the crowning shape as well as ensures exceptional comfort. The No Sag springs are strips of S shaped tempered wire that stretch from front to back of the frame and is attached by metal clips.
Rubber webbing is used for some tight seats such as smaller chairs, dining seats and ottomans. It is extremely strong and resilient, and will not break or sag.
CUSHIONS
Many of our pieces are designed with loose seat and back cushions. The seat cushions are made standard with high density foam that is double wrapped in a layer of Dacron. The Dacron not only creates comfort, but also protects the foam from elements such as air and light that cause the foam to break down faster. The standard back cushion is filled with a loose Dacron.
We also provide the option of upgrading the seat and back cushions. We offer Feather, Down or Synthetic down fills. All options provide a soft, comfortable feel, but require regular maintenance by constantly fluffing them.
Another option available for the seat cushions is the envelope fill. The envelope requires low maintenance, but maintains the soft feather feel. These cushions are made with a foam core that is wrapped in a layer of Dacron. This is then encased in a double sided 20/80 or 40/60 wrap, allowing for the cushion to be flipped. The feather proof casings are sewn together with a zipper so that the foam can be taken out and replaced if needed.
UPHOLSTERY
Each frame has many layers padding it for comfort and durability.
- Fabric decking over the springing system
- Cotton felt as a base
- Foam and polyester for comfort
- Foam deck edge on front rail to support cushions and keep them in place
- Upholstery fabric
- Cushions
Each step in the upholstery is completed by one upholsterer from beginning to end. This way the workmanship is consistent throughout the piece, and one upholsterer is responsible his completed piece.
CUSTOM
What makes Silva unique is that we have the ability to customize any piece of furniture. The possibilities to our customizing abilities are as vast as one’s imagination. Production time for these pieces may take longer, but they are well worth the wait. Our upholsterers are encouraged to take their time to ensure that we are producing a quality product that we can be proud of. Prices will vary depending on the style of furniture, and the changes being made.
PRODUCTION TIME
At Silva, we make our frames as the orders come in. We do not stock frames because of the fact that we do offer the ability to customize. Also, we make it our policy not to make the frames before the fabric arrives to us. Some fabrics may take weeks for delivery and we do not want to take the risk of the frame being damaged while on the floor waiting to be upholstered. We are producing a top of the line product that is hand crafted for the individual.
